Ahmad Yasuf is a Syrian scholar of Arabic literature and Quranic studies, known for his work Jamaliyat al-Mufrada al-Quraniya (The Aesthetics of the Quranic Word) .
Academic Background and Career
Yasuf served as a teaching assistant (muʿīd) in the Faculty of Letters at the University of Aleppo in Syria . He studied under the scholar Nur al-Din 'Itr, the head of the Quranic and Hadith Sciences Department at the University of Damascus and a professor at both Damascus and Aleppo universities, who commended Yasuf's research for bridging classical rhetorical traditions with modern literary scholarship .
Scholarly Focus and Methodology
Yasuf's scholarly contributions focus on the stylistic and rhetorical dimensions of Quranic vocabulary (al-mufrada) . In his monograph Jamaliyat al-Mufrada al-Quraniya, published in Damascus in 1415 AH, he compiled and analyzed aesthetic and stylistic observations on individual words that had previously been scattered across classical and modern treatises on Quranic inimitability (iʿjāz) and rhetorical exegesis (al-tafsīr al-bayānī) .
In his analysis, Yasuf explored how individual words operate in relation to imagery, cadence, and core rhetorical figures including simile, metaphor, metonymy, and concision . He also examined the contextual suitability of vocabulary choices, linguistic nuance between near-synonyms, and the semantic and structural functions of verse-ending rhymes (al-fāṣila) .
