Ahmad Mahmoud Abd al-Sami al-Hafyan is a contemporary scholar of Quranic recitation (tajwid) and readings (qira'at), affiliated with the Shafi'i school.

Scholarly Contributions

Al-Hafyan focused his scholarship on the sciences of Quranic recitation and the canonical variants of the Quran. He composed al-Wafi fi Kayfiyyat Tartil al-Quran al-Karim (The Comprehensive Guide on the Method of Reciting the Noble Quran), an educational text on tajwid designed for both teachers and students; the work provides theoretical explanations alongside practical exercises and emphasizes the necessity of oral transmission under qualified instructors.

In the field of Quranic variants, he authored Mujaz Mukhtasar fi Ya'at al-Idafah bi-Suwar al-Quran al-Azim (A Concise Summary of the Attached Pronoun Ya's Across the Chapters of the Noble Quran), in which he systematically recorded the occurrences of ya'at al-idafah across the surahs, identified the differing vocalizations among the canonical readers between vowelization (fath) and quiescence (iskan), and supplied corresponding verses from the didactic poem Hirz al-Amani wa-Wajh al-Tahani (al-Shatibiyya). He also prepared and edited classical texts on qira'at, completing his critical edition of Abu Hafs Umar ibn Qasim al-Nashshar's al-Mukarrar fi ma Tawatura min al-Qira'at al-Sab' wa-Taharar in Muharram 1420 AH (April 2000 CE), to which his treatise on ya'at al-idafah was appended.
