Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Shanqiti (d. 1434 AH / 2012–2013 CE) was a Mauritanian scholar of Maliki jurisprudence, legal theory, and Arabic language who served as a teacher at al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca.

Biography and Career

Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Amin ibn Ahmad ibn al-Mukhtar al-Jankani al-Shanqiti al-Mahdari was a close student and paternal cousin of the Mauritanian scholar Muhammad al-Amin al-Shanqiti. He accompanied him closely over an extended period, observed his scholarly conduct, and preserved his legacy. Among his engagements with his teacher's output was receiving and compiling his dictated commentary on legal theory, Nathr al-Wurud, as well as transcribing his legal responses. Following Muhammad al-Amin's death in Mecca in 1393 AH (1974 CE), he washed his body at his residence and composed an elegy commemorating his knowledge and character.

Al-Shanqiti was appointed to teach at al-Masjid al-Haram, where he delivered instruction in the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), principles of Quranic exegesis (usul al-tafsir), and Arabic grammar through the Alfiyyah of Ibn Malik. He continued teaching at the sanctuary until his retirement in 1408 AH (1987–1988 CE). He died in 1434 AH (2012–2013 CE).

Scholarly Standing and Contributions

Al-Shanqiti specialized primarily in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and legal theory (usul al-fiqh), while also maintaining extensive knowledge of Arab genealogy (ansab), the prophetic biography (al-sirah al-nabawiyyah), Arabic literature, and history.

His major contribution to Maliki legal studies was Mawahib al-Jalil min Adillat Khalil, a four-volume work written to substantiate the rulings of Mukhtasar Khalil by identifying and articulating their evidentiary roots in the Quran, the Sunnah, and legal reasoning. He also recorded the biographical memoir Majalis ma Fadilat al-Shaykh Muhammad al-Amin al-Shanqiti, documenting the assemblies, discussions, and treatises of his mentor.
