Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Baali (1108–1189 AH / 1697–1775 CE) was a Syrian Hanbali jurist, legal theorist, and mufti based in Damascus, best known for his legal commentary al-Rawd al-Nadi and his treatise on legal theory al-Dhukhr al-Harir .

Lineage and early life

His full lineage is Shihab al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Mustafa ibn Ibrahim al-Khazraji . He was of Aleppine origin, was associated with Baalbek by nisba, and was born, raised, and resided in Damascus . In manuscript colophons, he is also referred to as al-Khatib al-Hanbali, and he adhered spiritually to the Khalwati Sufi order .

Al-Baali was born in Damascus on 8 Ramadan 1108 AH (c. 31 March 1697 CE), though another report places his birth on 18 Ramadan . He grew up in a scholarly household under the tutelage of his father, Jamal al-Din Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Baali, and was the brother of the Hanbali jurist Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah al-Baali . After reciting the Quran, he pursued Islamic scholarship, studying Quranic exegesis, hadith, and Hanbali jurisprudence under his father .

Education and teachers

Al-Baali studied Hanbali fiqh and hadith under the Hanbali mufti of Damascus, Abu al-Mawahib al-Baali, as well as Abd al-Qadir ibn Umar al-Taghlibi, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Jalil al-Mawahibi, Awwad ibn Ubayd Allah al-Kuri, and Mustafa ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Labadi . He studied hadith, tafsir, and other disciplines under Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi, Ismail al-Ajluni, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ghazzi, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Kamili and his son Abd al-Salam, the Shafi'i mufti Ahmad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Ghazzi, and Muhammad ibn Isa al-Kinani . When the Meccan scholar Muhammad ibn Ahmad Aqilah visited Damascus, al-Baali studied hadith with him and received an ijazah .

In 1165 AH (1751–1752 CE), he traveled to the Hijaz to perform the Hajj pilgrimage . While in Medina, he studied under Jafar ibn Hasan al-Barzanji . His various teachers granted him written licenses containing extensive praise .

Career and students

Al-Baali was appointed the Hanbali Mufti of Damascus . He held teaching sessions at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, training successive generations of students in jurisprudence, inheritance law (fara'id), and arithmetic, and he also delivered lessons in Medina during his time there . For his livelihood, he worked as a weaver of alajah fabric, relying on the earnings of his own hands until old age and physical weakness compelled him to leave the craft .

His prominent students included Mustafa ibn Sa'd al-Ruhaybani, Muhammad ibn Mustafa al-Labadi (who succeeded him as Hanbali mufti), Ibrahim ibn Jadid, and Zaki al-Din Abdullah al-Hattab al-Nabulusi .

In scholarship, al-Baali made significant contributions to late Hanbali jurisprudence and legal theory through his commentaries. He authored al-Rawd al-Nadi, an explanatory work on Muhammad ibn Badr al-Din al-Balbani's manual Kafi al-Mubtadi, integrating supplementary rulings from foundational school texts . He also composed al-Dhukhr al-Harir, a commentary on Ibn al-Najjar al-Futuhi's legal theory abridgment Mukhtasar al-Tahrir, and wrote Munyat al-Ra'id on the law of inheritance .

Scholarly standing

Later biographical chroniclers regarded al-Baali as a central transmitter of the Hanbali school in Syria. Jamil al-Shatti recorded that the transmission chain (isnad) of Hanbali jurisprudence in the Syrian lands terminated with him through his transmission from Abu al-Mawahib . His student Ibrahim ibn Jadid described him as deeply God-fearing, quick to weep, and marked by spiritual gravity . Ibn Badran characterized him as a scrupulous jurist, legal theorist, and master of inheritance division, commending his commentary al-Rawd al-Nadi as concise and thoroughly refined .

Death

Al-Baali died in Damascus in Muharram 1189 AH (March 1775 CE) . He was buried in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery in Damascus .
