Ahmad bin Hamdan al-Shahri is a contemporary Islamic writer and Quranic researcher known for his thematic Quranic study ʿAwāmil al-Naṣr wal-Tamkīn fī Daʿawāt al-Mursalīn ("Factors of Victory and Empowerment in the Missions of the Messengers") .
Scholarly Approach and Thematic Studies
Ahmad bin Hamdan bin Muhammad al-Shahri dedicated his primary thematic research to deducing the principles of divine victory and social and spiritual empowerment from the accounts of the prophets in the Quran . In ʿAwāmil al-Naṣr wal-Tamkīn fī Daʿawāt al-Mursalīn, he treats victory and empowerment as primarily Quranic subjects, observing that whenever the Quran relates the story of a messenger, it highlights the specific factors behind his triumph and the causes of his adversaries' ruin, thereby yielding an integrated methodology .
Al-Shahri distinguishes between victory (naṣr) and empowerment (tamkīn), noting that tamkīn is a broader and more comprehensive concept encompassing preparation, steadfastness, strength, and enduring dominion . He specifically focuses on messengers (mursalīn) rather than prophets in general, arguing that the Quran establishes guaranteed victory and divine protection against murder specifically for messengers, as expressed in verses such as كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي ("God has decreed: 'I and My messengers shall surely prevail'") . He also emphasizes that individual prophetic missions showcased particular factors more prominently—such as patience in the mission of Moses and the mobilization of troops in the mission of Solomon .
In analyzing the causes of divine empowerment, al-Shahri identifies twelve core factors: pure faith in God, a supportive community, patience, mutual counsel in truth, the conveyance of the message, miracles, wisdom in calling to faith, commanding good and forbidding wrong, migration (hijrah), struggle (jihad), humble supplication (ḍarāʿah), and establishing religion . Beyond this monograph, he also authored Quranic thematic writings such as his paper al-Ṣināʿah fī al-Qurʾān al-Karīm ("Industry in the Holy Qur'an") .
