Ahmad bin Ahmad al-Mukhtar al-Shinqiti (1344–1434 AH / 1925–2013 CE) was a Mauritanian Maliki jurist and scholar of legal theory, best known for his legal work Mawahib al-Jalil min Adillat Khalil.
Early Life and Education
Ahmad bin Ahmad al-Mukhtar al-Jakani al-Shinqiti was born in Mauritania in 1344 AH (1925/1926 CE). He received a traditional education, memorizing the Quran and studying preliminary texts in Arabic linguistics and the Islamic religious sciences. In his home country, he studied Mukhtasar Khalil in jurisprudence as well as al-Takmil in legal theory (usul al-fiqh), without enrolling in formal modern institutions.
He later traveled to Saudi Arabia to study under the Mauritanian exegete and jurist Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti. He accompanied him closely, studying Quranic exegesis (tafsir), legal theory, and Arabic grammar under his tutelage, and received an authorization (ijaza) from him in tafsir and other disciplines.
Teaching Career and Later Life
Al-Shinqiti was appointed as a teacher in the Grand Mosque of Mecca, where he taught for many years until his retirement in 1408 AH (1987/1988 CE). During his tenure in the sanctuary, he gave instruction in legal theory, principles of Quranic exegesis (usul al-tafsir), and Ibn Malik's Alfiyyah in Arabic grammar. Following his retirement, he returned to settle in Mauritania to engage in teaching and spreading religious knowledge. He died in 1434 AH (2012/2013 CE).
Scholarly Standing
Al-Shinqiti was primarily specialized in Maliki jurisprudence and legal theory, alongside extensive familiarity with Arab genealogy, the Prophetic biography, Arabic literature, and history. He authored Mawahib al-Jalil min Adillat Khalil in four volumes, an evidentiary work that systematically supplies textual proofs from the Quran, the Sunnah, and early transmissions for the legal rulings articulated in Mukhtasar Khalil, resorting to internal school transmissions and analogical reasoning when direct textual proofs were unavailable. He was described by al-Tayyib bin Umar as a prominent contemporary Salafi caller noted for his active propagation and his rigorous criticism of theological and religious innovations, especially those associated with Sufism.
