Abu al-Abbas Ahmad al-Manjur (926–995 AH / 1520–1587 CE) was a Moroccan Maliki jurist, hadith scholar, and legal theorist based in Fes, renowned for his commentary on the legal maxims of the Maliki school, Sharh al-Minhaj al-Muntakhab.

Life and Education

Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Manjur traced his origins to Meknes (Miknasa), but settled and lived in Fes. His father, Abu al-Hasan Ali, served as a prominent official and trustee within the royal court of the Wattasid state.

Al-Manjur studied under leading scholars of his era, including Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Yusaytini, Abu Zayd Abd al-Rahman Saqqin, Ali ibn Harun al-Matghari, Abd al-Wahid al-Wansharisi, and Ali ibn Qasim al-Zaqqaq, and received transmission authorization through correspondence from the Egyptian scholar al-Najm al-Ghayti. He taught extensively and transmitted knowledge to a distinguished generation of scholars, among them Ahmad Baba al-Tinbukti, Ibn al-Qadi, Abu Mahdi Isa al-Saktani, Abu al-Izz Abd al-Rahman al-Fasi, and Abu al-Qasim ibn Abi al-Nu'aym al-Ghassani.

Scholarly Standing and Impact

Al-Manjur was recognized for his expertise across jurisprudence, legal theory, hadith transmitters, and historical chronology. Muhammad al-Ifrani described him as unmatched in his generation in his knowledge of royal histories, biographies, and the generational classes of scholars. His student Ibn al-Qadi termed him the foremost memorizer of his time, noting his command of history and hadith biographical evaluation, while Abu Salim al-Ayyashi described him as the later tradition's hadith master of the Maghrib and the leader of verifiers. Biographers recorded his rigorous personal adherence to the prophetic Sunnah, such that students would observe his specific habits to determine prophetic practice.

In legal theory and substantive law, his Sharh al-Minhaj al-Muntakhab served as an authoritative elucidation of al-Zaqqaq's didactic poem on Maliki legal maxims, drawing extensively upon the foundational works of al-Maqqari and Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi. Al-Manjur also recorded his chains of transmission in a renowned compilation of scholarly genealogies (fihrasah), dedicated to the Saadian sultan Ahmad al-Mansur; along with the transmissions of Ibn Ghazi al-Miknasi, it became a central nexus connecting Moroccan scholarship to the Andalusian and eastern Islamic worlds.

Death

Al-Manjur died in Fes on 16 Dhu al-Qi'da 995 AH (1587 CE).
