Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Banna al-Saati (c. 1300–1378 AH / c. 1881–1958 CE) was an Egyptian hadith scholar best known for his monumental thematic restructuring of early hadith collections, foremost among them al-Fath al-Rabbani li-Tartib Musnad al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal al-Shaybani .

Life and Career

His full name was Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Banna, known as al-Saati due to his trade as a watchmaker and repairer . He resided in the town of al-Mahmudiyya in the Beheira Governorate, where his eldest son, Hassan al-Banna, was born . He traveled to Alexandria in pursuit of learning, and later relocated with his entire family to Cairo so his son could enroll in the Dar al-Ulum teachers' college and to enable himself to interact with scholars at al-Azhar and visiting hadith specialists .

In Cairo, he established his study and workplace at Atfat al-Rassam, on the corner of the al-Fakahani Mosque in the al-Ghuriyya district, adjacent to the al-Mu'ayyad Mosque . His shop became a gathering place for researchers and students of hadith from al-Azhar . He personally oversaw the printing of his writings at a neighboring press on al-Fahhamin Street, meticulously proofreading drafts gathering by gathering . Among those who received scholarly authorizations (ijazat) from him or through his circle were Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sani and Shaykh Ali al-Mu'ayyad . He was described as of medium height, slender build, and wheat complexion, dressed simply in a jubbah, caftan, and turban, and characterized by personal piety and ascetic detachment .

Scholarly Contribution

Al-Saati devoted more than forty-five years—over two-thirds of his life—to organizing and elucidating early hadith literature . His primary achievement was rearranging collections arranged by companion narrators (masanid) into thematic chapters arranged by subject matters, dividing the material into seven broad sections: theology, jurisprudence, Quranic commentary, inducement (al-targhib), deterrence (al-tarhib), history, and the conditions of the afterlife . Alongside al-Fath al-Rabbani, he authored its accompanying commentary Bulugh al-Amani min Asrar al-Fath al-Rabbani, and similarly reorganized other early corpora in his work Bada'i al-Minan .

Death

Al-Saati died before noon on Wednesday, 8 Jumada al-Ula 1378 AH (19 November 1958 CE), at the age of seventy-seven years and several months . His funeral prayer was led by Sayyid Sabiq at the al-Rifa'i Mosque by the Citadel in Cairo, and he was buried in the al-Shafi'i cemetery (Qarafat al-Imam al-Shafi'i) beside his son Hassan .
