Abu Ya'la al-Khalili (d. 446 AH / 1054 CE) was a hadith scholar and judge from Qazwin, best known for his biographical work on hadith transmitters, al-Irshad fi Ma'rifat Ulama al-Hadith (Guidance in Knowing the Scholars of Hadith) .

Lineage and Education

His full name was al-Khalil ibn Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Khalil ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Khalili al-Qazwini . He studied hadith extensively and heard narrations directly from numerous teachers, including Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Salih al-Qazwini, Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Kaysani, al-Qasim ibn Alqamah, Abu Hafs Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Kattani, Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis, Abu al-Husayn al-Khaffaf, Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Yazid al-Fami, and Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim . He also received written transmission authorizations (ijazah) from scholars across various regions, including Abu Bakr ibn al-Muqri, Abu Hafs ibn Shahin, Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Bakka'i from Kufa, Abu Ahmad al-Ghitrifi from Jurjan, and Abu Amr ibn Hamdan from Nishapur .

A broad group of scholars narrated on his authority, including one of his own teachers, Abu Bakr ibn Lal, as well as his son Abu Zayd Waqid ibn al-Khalil, Ismail ibn Abd al-Jabbar ibn Maki, and Abu Ibrahim al-Jalil ibn Abd al-Jabbar . Later scholars such as al-Khatib al-Baghdadi and Ibn Makula transmitted from him via ijazah .

Scholarly Standing and Assessment

Al-Khalili was recognized as a trustworthy hadith master (hafiz) who specialized in transmission pathways, narrator evaluation (rijal), and hidden textual defects (ilal) . Shirawayh al-Daylami recorded in his history of Hamadhan that al-Khalili was unique in his era in comprehension and intelligence . During his time with al-Hakim in Nishapur, al-Hakim questioned him about an obscure patronymic in an isnad from al-Zuhri; after deduction, al-Khalili correctly identified the narrator as Muhammad ibn Abi Hafsah, drawing al-Hakim's surprise and praise .

Ibn Makula noted that al-Khalili narrated frequently from memory . Later critics, including al-Dhahabi, observed that while his biographical dictionary al-Irshad demonstrates wide learning, it contains a notable number of lapses and errors, likely because he composed parts of it from memory . The work was later abridged by Abu Tahir al-Silafi . Al-Khalili also compiled a local history on the merits and scholars of his native city, Tarikh Qazwin wa-Fadailuha .

Death

Al-Khalili lived into his eighties and died in Qazwin at the end of the year 446 AH (1054 CE) .
