Abu Musa al-Ruayni (581–632 AH / 1185–1234 CE) was an Andalusian hadith scholar and preacher from Ronda, renowned for his extensive travels and his biographical dictionary on the Companions, al-Jami lima fi al-Musannafat al-Jawami min Asma al-Sahaba .
Origin and Education
He was Isa ibn Sulayman ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Malik al-Ruayni al-Andalusi, known by the kunya Abu Musa, and he also adopted the kunya Abu Muhammad later in life . Born in one of the two months of Rabi' in 581 AH, he was raised in Ronda and later settled in Malaga . He began his studies in al-Andalus, hearing hadith in Malaga from Abu Muhammad Ibn al-Qurtubi and Abu al-Abbas Ibn al-Jayyar (also recorded as Ibn al-Khiyar), and in the fortress of Estepa (Hisn Ustuba) from Ibrahim ibn Ali al-Khawlani .
Al-Ruayni traveled east to perform the pilgrimage and seek knowledge, undertaking an extensive scholarly journey that lasted around sixteen years—or over twenty years according to another report favored by Ibn al-Zubayr al-Gharnati . In Mecca, he studied under Yunus al-Qassar al-Hashimi (also recorded as al-Assar), and in Damascus, he transmitted extensively from Abu Muhammad Ibn al-Bunn and Abu al-Qasim Ibn Sasra . He also studied in Alexandria, Homs, and Mina, amassing extensive manuscripts and high chains of transmission . On his journey home, he was captured by the enemy, an ordeal during which much of the written material he had collected was lost .
Career and Students
Al-Ruayni arrived back in Malaga in early 631 AH, where he served as the city's official preacher (khatib) . Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn al-Abbar, who received general authorization (ijaza) for his narrations, as well as Ibn Fartun in Ceuta, Abu Abd Allah al-Tanjali, Humayd al-Zahid, and al-Zaki al-Birzali .
Beyond his major work on the Companions, he also compiled a dictionary of his teachers titled Mu'jam al-Shuyukh .
Scholarly Standing
Al-Ruayni was widely praised for his memorization, precision, and mastery of biographical evaluation. His contemporary Umar ibn al-Hajib described him as a meticulous and noble scholar of letters who was calm, dignified, and upright . Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi stated that none among the students of hadith matched him, while al-Zaki al-Birzali described him as a trustworthy and exact authority who narrated from memory . Ibn al-Abbar noted his expertise in narrator criticism, his excellent scribal transcription, and his thorough command of transmission lines .
Death
Al-Ruayni died in Malaga in Rabi' al-Awwal 632 AH (on the 3rd of the month according to Ibn al-Abbar) at the age of fifty-one .
