Abu Madyan al-Fasi (1112–1181 AH / 1700–1768 CE) was a Moroccan preacher, historian, and man of letters from Fes, known for his biographical commentary Mustadhab al-Akhbar bi-Atyab al-Akhbar.
Life and career
Abu Madyan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Fihri al-Fasi belonged to a prominent scholarly family in Fes, tracing his lineage back to his ancestor Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf al-Fasi. He was born and raised in Fes, where he spent his entire life.
Al-Fasi served as a preacher (khatib) and instructor at the University of al-Qarawiyyin for a period of time. Contemporary and later biographical sources describe him as dignified, respected, and possessed of exceptional eloquence and a pleasant sense of humor. He died in Fes in 1181 AH (1767 or 1768 CE), though some biographical registers record him only as being alive in 1132 AH (1720 CE), based on the date of his known manuscript autographs. His family maintained a long-standing tradition of occupying the pulpit at the Qarawiyyin mosque, continuing through his son Abd al-Hafiz and his grandson Abu al-Barakat al-Majdhub.
Scholarly contribution
Al-Fasi produced writings across literature, aphorisms, and the Prophetic biography (al-sirah al-nabawiyyah). In the field of biography, he authored Mustadhab al-Akhbar bi-Atyab al-Akhbar ("The Sweetest of Accounts Through the Best of Narratives"), an extensive commentary on Awjaz al-Siyar li-Khayr al-Bashar, the concise biographical treatise by the early philologist Ahmad ibn Faris, completing its composition in late Ramadan 1132 AH.
In adab and wisdom literature, he compiled Tuhfat al-Arib wa-Nuzhat al-Labib ("Gift of the Intelligent and Promenade of the Discerning"), an alphabetically arranged collection of maxims, moral admonitions, and anecdotes. An abridged version of this work was published alongside a Latin translation by the Austrian Orientalist Franz von Dombay in Vienna in 1805. He also authored Al-Mawarid al-Safiyah fi Sharh al-Nasiha al-Kafiyah ("The Pure Springs in Explaining Sufficient Counsel").
