Abu Hafan al-Muhazzami (d. 257 AH / 871 CE) was an Abbasid-era poet, philologist, and transmitter of poetry and literary lore from Basra who lived in Baghdad, best known for his biographical collection Akhbar Abi Nuwas ("Reports of Abu Nuwas") .
Biography
Abu Hafan, whose full name was 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Harb al-Muhazzami al-'Abdi, traced his maternal lineage to Muhazzam of the tribe of 'Abd al-Qays, from whom he took his nisba; his grandfather was a poet and orator in Basra during the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun . One source places his birth in 175 AH / 791 CE . Originally from Basra, he later settled in Baghdad .
Biographers describe Abu Hafan as living in severe poverty and straitened circumstances, often wearing clothing that barely covered him, alongside a reputation for drinking date-wine (nabidh) . He was noted for his wit, extemporaneous verse, and interactions with contemporary figures, maintaining correspondence and exchanges with the poet Di'bil al-Khuza'i, the scribe Sa'id ibn Humayd, and the prose writer Abu al-'Ayna' .
Abu Hafan died in 257 AH / 871 CE, though an alternative report places his death in 255 AH / 869 CE .
Scholarship and Standing
Abu Hafan studied under and transmitted from the philologist al-Asma'i, and also heard from Abu 'Amr Qa'nab ibn al-Muhriz al-Bahili . Those who transmitted from him included Yamut ibn al-Mazra', Ahmad ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur, and Junayd ibn Hakim al-Daqqaq .
He held a prominent position in Arabic literature, poetry transmission, and lexicography; the critic Maslama ibn Qasim described him as a poet and lexicographer prolific in literary transmissions with widely circulated writings . In the field of literary theory and biography, he authored a major work on poetic craft titled Sina'at al-Shi'r ("The Craft of Poetry") and a compilation titled Akhbar al-Shu'ara' ("Reports of the Poets") .
In hadith transmission, traditionists criticized him after he related a rejected report through al-Asma'i attributing to the Prophet ﷺ the statement that Imru' al-Qays is the leader of poets to Hellfire, which led scholars such as Ibn al-Jawzi and al-Dhahabi to deem his hadith transmission unreliable .
