Abu Bakr al-Wasiti (d. after 411 AH / 1020 CE) was a Shafi'i scholar and preacher of al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, best known for his treatise on the merits of the holy city, Fada'il Bayt al-Maqdis (The Merits of Jerusalem) .
Life and Career
His full name is Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Wasiti al-Maqdisi . Very few details of his life survive in classical biographical dictionaries . Abu Sa'd al-Sam'ani mentioned him in passing in al-Ansab when recording the entry of his brother, Abu Hafs 'Umar al-Wasiti, who had settled in Jerusalem . Al-Wasiti served as the Shafi'i preacher (khatib) of al-Aqsa Mosque, a post recorded by later Jerusalemite chroniclers such as Mujir al-Din al-'Ulaymi and Shihab al-Din al-Maqdisi .
Among his teachers, Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi noted that al-Wasiti transmitted hadith from Qadi al-Haras Muhammad ibn Sulayman . In 410 AH (1019–1020 CE), al-Wasiti dictated his treatise Fada'il Bayt al-Maqdis—which compiles prophetic reports, traditions from Companions and Successors, and historical narratives regarding the holy sites—to students at his home in Jerusalem . Although some later writers conjectured that he lived around 500 AH, this dating is dismissed because his scholarly transmission and contemporaries place his activity firmly in the early fifth century AH .
Scholarly Standing and Reception
Al-Wasiti's compilation became one of the primary classical sources on the virtues and history of Jerusalem and was frequently cited by later scholars . Authors who quoted and utilized his transmissions include Shihab al-Din al-Maqdisi in Muthir al-Gharam, Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi in I'lam al-Sajid, Ibn al-Mulaqqin in al-Tawdih bi-Sharh al-Jami' al-Sahih, and Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi in al-Muqaffa al-Kabir . His work was also cited by Badr al-Din al-'Ayni in 'Umdat al-Qari, al-Sakhawi in al-I'lan bi-al-Tawbikh, and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, who incorporated numerous narrations from al-Wasiti into his Quranic commentary al-Durr al-Manthur .
