Biography and travels
His full name was Ya'qub ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Nisaburi al-Isfarayini . Born after 230 AH, he engaged in extensive scholarly journeys across the Islamic world, traveling through Khurasan, Iraq, the Hijaz, Syria—visiting Damascus multiple times—Egypt, Yemen, the frontier posts (al-thughur), the Jazira, Fars, and Isfahan .
During his travels, he studied hadith and jurisprudence under prominent scholars. Among his prominent teachers were Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Yunus ibn Abd al-A'la, Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli, Umar ibn Shabba, Ali ibn Harb, and al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Za'farani . He also studied the legal rulings and treatises of al-Shafi'i directly under Ismail ibn Yahya al-Muzani and al-Rabi ibn Sulayman in Egypt, through which he became the first scholar to introduce the Shafi'i legal school and the books of al-Shafi'i to Isfarayin .
Transmission and students
He compiled al-Musnad al-sahih, a major extracted work (mustakhraj) that corroborated narrations from Sahih Muslim through his own independent chains of transmission while supplementing them with additional traditions at the end of thematic chapters .
A large circle of hadith scholars transmitted from him, including al-Tabarani, Ibn Adi, Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili, Abu Ali al-Nisaburi, Ahmad ibn Ali al-Razi, Yahya ibn Mansur, and his own son Abu Mus'ab Muhammad ibn Ya'qub . He was accompanied on journeys by his nephew, the hadith scholar al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Isfarayini, while his nephew's son, Abu Nu'aym Abd al-Malik ibn al-Hasan al-Isfarayini, was the last surviving narrator to transmit his work directly from him .
Standing and death
Abu Awana was widely praised for his precision and mastery in hadith; al-Hakim al-Naysaburi described him as one of the verified, reliable authorities among hadith scholars .
He died in 316 AH (928–929 CE), with his nephew al-Hasan specifying that his death occurred at the end of Dhu al-Hijjah of that year . He was buried within the town of Isfarayin, where a mausoleum (mashhad) was erected over his grave and became a site of visitation .
