Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Farra (527–580 AH / 1133–1185 CE) was a Hanbali jurist, judge, and hadith scholar of Baghdad, best known for his biographical dictionary Tajrid al-Asma wa al-Kuna al-Madhkura fi Kitab al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq .

Lineage and Early Life

His full name was Ubayd Allah ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Khalaf ibn al-Farra . He hailed from the Bab al-Azaj quarter of Baghdad and belonged to an illustrious lineage of Hanbali jurists and hadith scholars; his father was al-Qadi Abu al-Faraj, his grandfather was al-Qadi Abu Khazim, and his great-grandfather was the prominent Hanbali authority al-Qadi Abu Ya'la al-Farra . Ibn al-Farra was born on Monday night, 14 Dhu al-Hijjah 527 AH (October 1133 CE) .

Education and Scholarship

Ibn al-Farra received his initial training under the guidance of his father and pursued hadith transmission extensively on his own . Among his notable teachers were Abu Mansur Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Qazzaz, Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Khayrun, Abu al-Ma'ali Abd al-Khaliq ibn Abd al-Samad ibn al-Badan, Abu Sa'd Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Zawzani, Abu al-Badr Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Karkhi, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Hibat Allah ibn al-Abanusi, and Abu Bakr ibn al-Zaghuni .

He acquired valuable manuscript codices, including works in the handwriting of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and his residence in Baghdad became an active salon for scholars and students who gathered for hadith auditions, where he supported them with his own means . Among those who transmitted hadith from him were Abu Muhammad ibn al-Akhdar and al-Sharif Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Zaydi .

His scholarly contribution centered on hadith disciplines and transmitter criticism; in his biographical abridgment Tajrid al-Asma wa al-Kuna al-Madhkura fi Kitab al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq, he condensed the compendium of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi by isolating transmitter entries from extensive transmission chains . He also composed a treatise titled al-Rawd al-Nadir fi Hayat Abi al-Abbas al-Khadir .

Standing and Career

Ibn al-Farra served as a judge and court notary . Contemporary accounts describe him as well versed in judicial procedures and legal witnessing, possessing an imposing presence in his sessions, and renowned for generosity, good character, and affability . As recorded by Ibn al-Najjar from Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Qati'i, he was considered upright and reliable in his hadith transmission (adlan min riwayatih), though criticized as weak in his legal witnessing (da'ifan fi shahadatih) .

Death

Ibn al-Farra was struck by hemiplegia on Saturday night, 3 Dhu al-Hijjah 580 AH, and died seven days later on Friday, the day of Eid al-Adha, 10 Dhu al-Hijjah 580 AH (March 1185 CE) ; an alternate report dates his death to 578 AH . He was buried the following day in the Bab Harb cemetery in Baghdad .

List of Works

  • Tajrid al-Asma wa al-Kuna al-Madhkura fi Kitab al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq is a biographical dictionary of hadith transmitters that abridges al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's major compendium al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq. Designed for quicker reference, it strips away the extended transmission chains and hadith texts of the original work to isolate biographical profiles of transmitters who share identical names, patronymics, lineages, or agnomens while remaining distinct individuals.
