Abu al-Qasim al-Halabi (d. after 370 AH / 981 CE) was a Syrian hadith scholar and teacher from Aleppo who settled in Damascus and compiled a collection of narrations received from his teachers known as Hadith Abi al-Qasim al-Halabi.
Life and Education
His full name was Isma'il ibn al-Qasim ibn Isma'il, and he was known by the honorific title of imam as well as the professional designations al-Khayyat (the tailor) and al-Mu'addib (the tutor). Although originally from Aleppo, he also bore the nisba al-Misri, which biographers attribute to his having lived for a period in Egypt. He eventually relocated to Damascus, taking up residence near its southern gate of Bab Kaysan.
Al-Halabi traveled across the Levant and Cilician borderlands in pursuit of prophetic traditions, hearing hadith from scholars in various regional centers. In Aleppo, he studied under Yahya ibn Ali al-Kindi, Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Rafiqi, and Ali ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Ghada'iri. In Antioch, his teachers included Abu al-Tahir al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Fil, Ishaq ibn Abi Abd al-Rahman al-Utrush, al-Walid ibn Abd al-Aziz, and Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Attar. He also studied in Tarsus under Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Sawaniti and Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Daraqi, and in Adana under Adi ibn Ahmad al-Adhani, alongside reports taken from Mak-hul al-Bayruti and Abu Ahmad al-Abbas ibn al-Fadl al-Makki.
Scholarly Activity and Transmission
Al-Halabi taught and delivered hadith sessions in Aleppo, Homs, Hama, and Damascus. Among those who related hadith from him were the Damascus traditionist Abu al-Qasim Tammam ibn Muhammad al-Razi, the preacher and imam of Homs Abu al-Ma'mar Musaddad ibn Ali al-Amluki, Abd al-Wahhab al-Maydani, Makki ibn al-Ghamr, and al-Hasan ibn Shawwash.
His primary transmitted text is a hadith notebook titled Hadith Abi al-Qasim al-Halabi (also preserved under the title Hadith al-Halabi 'an Shuyukhih), which records narrations he directly received from his authorities across different Syrian and frontier cities.
Al-Halabi died after Dhu al-Qa'da 370 AH (c. May 981 CE), a date established by his recorded transmission of traditions at the Great Mosque of Homs on Friday, 27 Dhu al-Qa'da 370 AH. A variant transmission in some manuscripts places this teaching assembly in Dhu al-Qa'da 390 AH (c. October 1000 CE).
