Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani (d. after 380 AH / 990 CE) was an Arab literary scholar and critic, best known for his critical treatise on poetry, al-Wadih fi Mushkilat Shi'r al-Mutanabbi ("The Clear Exposition on the Obscure Verses of al-Mutanabbi's Poetry") .
Biography and Education
His full name was Abu al-Qasim Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Asbahani, and he is also referenced under the kunya Abu Muhammad . Details of his birth and death years remain unrecorded in classical biographical compendia, though evidence from his writings indicates that he was active by around 336 AH, having transmitted from the philologist Abd al-Wahid al-Halabi (al-Lughawi, d. 351 AH) . He was a contemporary of the grammarian Ibn Jinni and directly narrated material from him, as well as from Ibn al-Najjar (Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Tamimi, d. 402 AH) .
He was active during the reign of the Buyid ruler Baha' al-Dawla (r. 379–403 AH), to whose court he dedicated his critical work . Internal textual evidence shows that he appended further poetic verses to his treatise after the conclusion of 410 AH, living to an age of more than seventy-five years .
Critical Method and Standing
Al-Asbahani was recognized for his deep erudition in literature and rhetoric . The occasion for composing al-Wadih fi Mushkilat Shi'r al-Mutanabbi arose when a prominent court figure read Ibn Jinni's abridged commentary on the diwan of al-Mutanabbi (al-Fasr al-Saghir) to him; finding both sound observations and errors in Ibn Jinni's explanations, al-Asbahani dictated his treatise to evaluate and rectify these difficult verses, often expanding his critique by citing thematic parallels from other poets . Later scholars such as Abd al-Qadir al-Baghdadi drew on his biographical notices of al-Mutanabbi, mistakenly citing the work as Idah al-Mushkil . Historical accounts transmitted by him, including the circumstances of al-Mutanabbi's imprisonment in Homs by Ibn Kayghalagh, were also cited by later historians such as Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi .
In literary theory, al-Asbahani's formulations on the primacy of poetic phrasing (lafz) over underlying meaning (ma'na)—asserting that meanings are common to all minds and that artistic merit resides in formulation and composition—preceded similar discussions by Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani in Dala'il al-I'jaz and influenced later critics such as Ibn Rashiq al-Qayrawani in al-'Umda . In al-Subh al-Munbi, Yusuf al-Badi'i enumerated al-Asbahani among the earliest critics to write specialized treatises examining the complex verses of al-Mutanabbi and responding to Ibn Jinni . Despite this early recognition, his biography and treatise remained largely overlooked in later biographical dictionaries until modern scholarship recovered his text from a manuscript in the library of the Zaytuna Mosque in Tunis .
