Name, Birth, and Travels

He was Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Hasan (also recorded as ibn al-Husayn and ibn al-Hasan) ibn Abi Bakr al-Ardabili al-Tabrizi, bearing the honorific title Taj al-Din and the kunya Abu al-Hasan . He was born in Ardabil in Azerbaijan around 670 AH, a date he subsequently refined to 677 AH, though alternative reports place his birth in 667 AH or 674 AH . He took up residence in Tabriz before embarking on extensive travels after 716 AH, visiting Baghdad, al-Mashhad, al-Hillah, and Maraghah . After performing the pilgrimage in Mecca, he entered Egypt with the Egyptian caravan in 722 AH and established his permanent residence in Cairo .

Education and Scholarly Career

Al-Tabrizi acquired an expansive education across the rational and legal sciences, including jurisprudence, legal theory, Quranic exegesis, hadith, grammar, rhetoric, logic, mathematics, geometry, inheritance laws, theology, and medicine . In the East, he studied under scholars such as Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi, Shams al-Din Ibn al-Mu'adhdhin, Rukn al-Din al-Hadithi, Nizam al-Din al-Tusi, Burhan al-Din Ubayd Allah, Sayyid Rukn al-Din, Ala al-Din al-Numan al-Khwarazmi, Jamal al-Din Hasan al-Shirazi, Siraj al-Din al-Ardabili, and Fakhr al-Din Jar Allah al-Jandari . He stated that he began issuing legal verdicts at the age of thirty .

Following his arrival in Cairo, he heard hadith from teachers including Badr al-Din Ibn Jama'ah, al-Wani, al-Khatani, and al-Dabbusi . He took up residence at the Hussamiyyah madrasa, where a teaching chair was instituted for him and where he subsequently served as an instructor . He taught numerous students, among whom was Ibn al-Mulqin, who attended his study circle at the Hussamiyyah .

In hadith methodology, al-Tabrizi restructured and critically expanded Ibn al-Salah's Ulum al-Hadith in his manual al-Kafi fi Ulum al-Hadith, drawing upon the structural framework of Ibn Jama'ah's al-Manhal al-Rawi . He also compiled a specialized work on legal hadith titled al-Qistas al-Mustaqim fi al-Hadith al-Sahih al-Qawim and wrote analytical glosses on al-Qazwini's Shafi'i legal text al-Hawi al-Saghir .

Standing

Biographers recognized al-Tabrizi as a versatile master across multiple disciplines and as a Sufi shaykh of upright conduct . Al-Dhahabi described him as a prominent, celebrated scholar who maintained a vast circle of students and possessed an exemplary moral standard . Taj al-Din al-Subki noted his skill in diverse fields and observed that he concentrated heavily on hadith studies in the latter part of his life . Jamal al-Din al-Isnawi praised his untiring dedication to teaching and highlighted his exceptional mastery of al-Hawi al-Saghir, a work al-Tabrizi once read in its entirety seven times in a single month . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani commended his abridgment of Ibn al-Salah's treatise as exceptionally beneficial .

Illness and Death

In his later years, al-Tabrizi suffered from severe hearing loss; he continued to instruct his students with text in hand, gesturing to verify their comprehension . He was subsequently afflicted by hemiplegia and died of the condition in Cairo during Ramadan 746 AH (a variant report records 749 AH) . He was buried in his tomb at al-Rawdah, outside the gate of Bab al-Barqiyyah .
