Abu Abd Allah al-Tamimi (d. c. 550 AH / 1155 CE) was an Iraqi jurist, hadith scholar, and transmitter from Basra, best known for his compendium on Prophetic virtues, Talqih al-Uqul fi Fadail al-Rasul.

Identity and Background

His full name was Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Tamimi al-Basri. He belonged by lineage to the Arab tribe of Banu Tamim and lived and worked in Basra. Standard biographical sources preserve scarce independent records regarding the details of his early life, and much of what is established about him derives from transmission certificates (sama'at) and references preserved in later compilation records, such as the Mashyakha of Siraj al-Din al-Qazwini. He died in the early sixth century AH (c. 550 AH).

Teachers

Al-Tamimi studied under and transmitted hadith from several prominent figures in Basra and Baghdad. Among his most significant Basran authorities was Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Umar al-Hashimi, from whom he received twenty-five narrations. He also narrated from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Tamimi al-Razi, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hinna'i, al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Tufawi, and Abu Mansur Zayd ibn Tahir al-Lalaka'i in Basra, as well as the Baghdadi scholar Abu al-Ma'ali Khayrun ibn Abd al-Malik al-Dabbas (d. 507 AH).

Scholarly Contribution

Al-Tamimi is primarily remembered for his significant hadith collection Talqih al-Uqul fi Fadail al-Rasul (The Inoculation of Minds Regarding the Virtues of the Messenger). Bridging the genres of hadith compilations and Prophetic biography (al-sira al-nabawiyya), the work gathers approximately 581 narrations recorded with complete chains of transmission (isnad) arranged across thirty-four thematic chapters focusing on the special merits, moral character, and distinct prerogatives of the Prophet Muhammad. Al-Tamimi chose its metaphorical title to signify the sharpening and cultivating of intellects through the realization and contemplation of Prophetic virtues.
