Abd Allah ibn Ahmad Qadri (b. c. 1356 AH / 1937 CE), also known by the nisba al-Ahdal, is a Yemeni-born Islamic scholar and professor of Islamic jurisprudence who taught at the Islamic University of Medina.
Early life and education
Abd Allah ibn Ahmad Qadri al-Ahdal was born around 1356 AH in the region of Abs in northwestern Yemen. He received his early instruction in local traditional schools (kuttab), learning writing and the Quran, being tutored in recitation by a relative. Encouraged by that relative to pursue further study, he travelled to Samtah in Saudi Arabia to join the schools established by Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Qar'awi. There he studied at al-Madrasa al-Salafiyya and continued through the local Scientific Institute (al-Ma'had al-'Ilmi) until completing secondary school.
In 1382 AH, he enrolled at the Islamic University of Medina, studying in the Faculty of Sharia as part of the institution's second cohort of students, and graduated in 1385 AH. During his studies, he was a student of the Mauritanian scholar Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti, transcribing and abridging material from his exegeses of Surah al-Nur and Surah Hud.
Academic career and scholarship
After his graduation, Qadri was appointed as an instructor in the Intermediate Institute affiliated with the Islamic University of Medina, before moving to teach at its Secondary Institute. He later became a professor of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) within the university's Department of Graduate Studies, where he was appointed head of the jurisprudence division.
His scholarly output focused on jurisprudence, contemporary social issues, and Islamic thought. Among his works is Wiqayat al-mujtama' min al-muskirat wal-mukhaddirat ("Safeguarding Society from Intoxicants and Narcotics"), published by the Islamic University of Medina, addressing modern societal vices through Islamic legal frameworks. He also authored al-Sibaq ila al-'uqul ("The Race for Minds"), which treats ideological movements and intellectual engagement.
