Abd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Zayd is a contemporary Saudi scholar and researcher, best known for his single-volume abridgment of al-Baghawi's Quranic commentary, titled Mukhtasar Tafsir al-Baghawi al-Musamma bi-Ma'alim al-Tanzil (The Abridgment of al-Baghawi's Commentary Named "The Milestones of Revelation") .
Scholarly Contribution and Reception
Al-Zayd, whose full name is Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Ali al-Zayd, undertook an abridgment of Ma'alim al-Tanzil by Abu Muhammad al-Husayn ibn Mas'ud al-Baghawi to make the classical commentary accessible to general readers . In his methodology, he strictly retained al-Baghawi's original wording and avoided external additions, inserting only minor connective particles in parentheses when necessary . He excised lengthy chains of transmission (isnads) from the narrations, citing only the Companion who transmitted the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, and provided documentation (takhrij) for the included hadiths .
In condensing the material, al-Zayd limited multiple narrations with similar meanings to a single hadith or its relevant witness phrase, removed Israelite reports (Isra'iliyyat) unless corroborated in prophetic tradition, and omitted variant readings (qira'at) that did not affect the core meaning of the text .
His abridgment received a written commendation from the Saudi scholar Salih ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan in Shawwal 1413 AH, who endorsed his approach of presenting clear, simplified interpretations of the verses . The first edition of the work was published in Riyadh in 1416 AH .
