Abd Allah al-Afifi (d. 1364 AH / 1944–1945 CE) was an Egyptian man of letters, essayist, and poet, best known for his historical study al-Mar'a al-Arabiyya fi Jahiliyyatiha wa Islamiha and his cultural writings .
Career and Literary Debates
Al-Afifi held a post in the Egyptian Royal Diwan (dīwān jalālat al-malik) during the monarchy and maintained close ties with Hasan al-Ibrashi Pasha, the director of the royal privy purse . In that setting, he became recognized as a court poet, composing royal panegyrics for official occasions and state ceremonies .
His standing at court placed him in sharp literary friction with the essayist Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafi'i . When al-Rafi'i wrote in the journal al-Muqtataf that the Egyptian environment did not inherently nurture poetic genius and that Egypt lacked an enduring tradition of preeminent poets, al-Afifi launched a counter-campaign . He published a weekly column in the newspaper al-Balagh under the title Misr al-sha‘ira ("Poetic Egypt"), surveying Egyptian poets across the Islamic centuries to argue for the country's rich and sustained poetic heritage . Al-Rafi'i countered with sharp critical attacks against al-Afifi's poetry and royal eulogies in various periodicals .
Scholarly Contributions
Al-Afifi's most substantial contribution was al-Mar'a al-Arabiyya fi Jahiliyyatiha wa Islamiha ("The Arab Woman in Her Pre-Islamic Era and Her Islam"), an extensive multi-volume historical and cultural inquiry . In this work, he documented the social standing, virtues, hardships, and customs of Arab women in the pre-Islamic period—including practices such as captivity in warfare and female infanticide (wa'd)—before examining the legal, social, and moral reforms introduced by Islam . He traced women's active roles in early Islamic history, scholarly transmission, literature, and political events, extending his survey across various Arab and regional contexts .
