Abd Allah Abd al-Jabbar (d. 1432 AH / 2011 CE) was an Arab literary scholar and critic known for his regional studies on the literary heritage and figures of the Hejaz.
Scholarly Contributions
Abd al-Jabbar contributed to modern literary discourse through analytical essays and specialized studies on the literature of the Arabian Peninsula. He published biographical and critical articles in periodicals such as Majallat al-Risala, including studies of historical Hejazi writers such as Abd al-Aziz al-Zamzami.
His primary scholarly endeavor was the regionalized historical study of Arabic literature, exemplified by Qissat al-Adab fi al-Hijaz fi al-Asr al-Jahili ("The Story of Literature in the Hejaz in the Pre-Islamic Era"). The work investigated the distinct cultural environment of the Hejaz—broadly defined to encompass both the highland region and Tihamat al-Hijaz—departing from generalized surveys of ancient Arabian literature to trace localized artistic characteristics. In this study, Abd al-Jabbar researched the geography and urban centers of the region, the Mudari tribes, forms of governance, and religious practices, alongside thematic analyses of prose proverbs, the authenticity and genres of Hejazi poetry, musical traditions, and a register of regional poets.
