Academic Career and Research
His full name is Abd al-Rahman bin Mualla al-Luwayhiq al-Mutayri. He earned his master's degree with distinction on 13 Muharram 1412 AH from the Department of Islamic Culture at the College of Sharia at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. His thesis, al-Ghuluw fi al-Din fi Hayat al-Muslimin al-Muasirah ("Religious Extremism in Contemporary Muslim Life"), examined the conceptual boundaries, historical roots, and modern manifestations of ideological and behavioral extremism.
Al-Luwayhiq served as an assistant professor and professor at the College of Sharia in Riyadh. He continued his research into theological extremism and contemporary thought, producing Mushkilat al-Ghuluw fi al-Din fi al-Asr al-Hadir: al-Asbab, al-Athar, al-Ilaj ("The Problem of Religious Extremism in the Present Era: Causes, Effects, and Remedies"), published in 1419 AH (1998 CE).
Critical Edition and Reception
Al-Luwayhiq prepared a widely recognized critical edition of Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sadi's Quranic commentary, Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman fi Tafsir Kalam al-Mannan. He formatted the work into a single volume printed alongside the margins of a standard twenty-page-per-juz Quran layout, aligning each page of scripture directly with its corresponding interpretation to facilitate study. He collated the text against two primary manuscripts, including the author's autograph copy and the manuscript used by al-Matba'a al-Salafiyya.
In 1416 AH, Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Aqil, former head of the Permanent Committee of the Supreme Judicial Council, endorsed the layout after reviewing initial proofs. In 1420 AH, the sons of al-Sadi endorsed al-Luwayhiq's collation and edition as the standard authentic text of their father's commentary.
