Abd al-Rahim al-Tahhan is a contemporary Syrian Islamic scholar, preacher, and university lecturer, whose extensive audio lectures and sermons were transcribed and published under the title Khutab wa Durus al-Shaykh Abd al-Rahim al-Tahhan (Sermons and Lessons of Shaykh Abd al-Rahim al-Tahhan) .

Education and Family Background

Al-Tahhan is the brother of the hadith scholar Mahmud al-Tahhan . He completed his primary education in Saudi Arabia and his intermediate education in Aleppo, Syria . He pursued higher education at the Islamic University of Madinah, where he graduated at the top of his class . He subsequently completed his doctoral studies at Al-Azhar University in Cairo during the 1970s, earning a doctorate with first-class honors, reportedly in Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and its related sciences .

Teachers and Students

Al-Tahhan studied under several prominent scholars, including Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti, Abdullah Siraj al-Din, Muhammad Abu al-Khayr Zayn al-Abidin, Abd al-Rahman Zayn al-Abidin, and al-Mukhtar al-Shinqiti .

During his academic career at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, he taught several students who became well-known scholars and preachers, including A'id al-Qarni, Awad al-Qarni, and Sa'id ibn Musfir al-Qahtani, as well as reportedly Ali ibn Abd al-Khaliq al-Qarni .

Scholarly Orientation and Standing

Al-Tahhan became widely recognized for his public sermons and lecture series covering monotheism (tawhid), Quranic exegesis, jurisprudence (fiqh), and ethical refinement . In matters of governance and societal engagement, he emphasized the traditional stance of the early Muslim predecessors (salaf) regarding avoidance of courtly favors from rulers, while explicitly condemning extremist groups that engage in declaring other Muslims apostates (takfir) or carrying out bombings .

A scholarly disagreement arose between al-Tahhan and other contemporary figures, notably the hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani and Shaykh Abu Shaqra, prompting al-Tahhan to deliver a dedicated discourse titled Tawdih al-Haqq (Clarification of the Truth) . Commenting on the controversy, the scholar Nasir al-Aql observed that public discourse over their differences had been exaggerated, noting that both al-Tahhan and al-Albani contributed significantly to Islamic knowledge and preaching and were counted among people of truth and goodness rather than deviance .
