Abu Mansur Abd al-Qahir al-Baghdadi (d. 429 AH / 1037–1038 CE) was a Shafi'i jurist, Ash'ari theologian, and legal theorist known for his heresiographical treatise al-Farq bayn al-Firaq (The Difference Between the Sects) .
Lineage and Early Life
He was Abu Mansur Abd al-Qahir ibn Tahir ibn Muhammad al-Tamimi al-Baghdadi . Born and raised in Baghdad, he subsequently traveled with his father, Abu Abd Allah Tahir ibn Muhammad, a wealthy merchant of noble standing, to Nishapur . Abd al-Qahir inherited this wealth and expended it entirely in the pursuit of learning until he was impoverished, never utilizing his scholarship for financial gain .
Education and Scholarly Career
Al-Baghdadi studied multiple disciplines, including jurisprudence, legal theory, theology, hadith, mathematics, Arabic grammar, and prosody, and was described as having taught across seventeen fields of knowledge . His primary mentor was Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayini, and following his teacher's death, al-Baghdadi was appointed in his place to dictate lessons at the Uqayl Mosque in Nishapur, where he delivered lectures for years . Among his other prominent teachers were Abu Amr Ismail ibn Nujayd, Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Matar, Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili, and Abu Ahmad ibn Adi .
Numerous scholars attended his circles and studied under him, including Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi, Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, Nasir ibn al-Husayn al-Marwazi, Abu Bakr Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Muhammad al-Shiruyi, and his son-in-law Abu al-Muzaffar al-Isfarayini .
In legal theory, al-Baghdadi followed his master Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayini in defending the positions of al-Shafi'i, including the doctrine that the Quran cannot be abrogated by the Sunnah . In theological doctrine, as expounded in his work Usul al-Din (The Principles of Religion), he addressed core Ash'ari tenets, such as the initial obligation of reasoning upon the legally accountable individual . He also authored al-Takmila fi al-Hisab (The Completion in Arithmetic), reflecting his expertise in mathematical calculation and the division of inheritance .
Standing
Al-Baghdadi was widely acclaimed among Ash'ari scholars and Shafi'i jurists. Abu Uthman al-Sabuni described him as one of the foremost leaders of legal theory and prominent figures of Islam by scholarly consensus, praising his structured exposition and refined composition . Abu al-Muzaffar al-Isfarayini regarded him as peerless in his breadth of knowledge and prolific writings across various disciplines .
Departure from Nishapur and Death
Following civil unrest and incursions caused by the Turkmens in Nishapur, al-Baghdadi relocated to Isfarayin . His arrival was met with great celebration by the local scholarly community and residents . He lived there only a short time before his death in 429 AH / 1037–1038 CE, though an alternate report places his death in 427 AH . By consensus of the local scholars, he was buried directly alongside his teacher Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayini .
