Outside the formal academic setting, al-Muhammadi attended extensive lessons in hadith and hadith nomenclature delivered by the traditionist Subhi al-Samarra'i at the Hajji Mahmud al-Buniyyah Mosque and the Burhan al-Din Mulla Hammadi Mosque in al-Karkh, in addition to studying under him at the university .
Al-Muhammadi's research centers on the methodology of classical hadith critics, transmitter evaluation (ilm al-rijal), and documenting modern Baghdadi traditionalist scholarship. In his biographical treatise A'lam al-Madrasah al-Hadithiyyah al-Baghdadiyyah al-Mu'asirah (Figures of the Contemporary Baghdadi Hadith School), he examined the scholarly trajectories of three major twentieth-century Baghdad hadith authorities: Abd al-Karim Sa'iqa, Subhi al-Samarra'i, and Bashar Awwad Marouf . In the field of narrator criticism, his treatise Man Qala Fihi al-Bukhari "Fihi Nazar" (Those Concerning Whom al-Bukhari Said "He is Subject to Scrutiny") provided an applied study of al-Bukhari's specific evaluative terminology in al-Tarikh al-Kabir .
