Abd al-Malik ibn Bakr Qadi (full name: Abd al-Malik ibn Bakr Abd Allah Qadi) is a contemporary Hadith scholar and researcher known for his contributions to the thematic classification and encyclopedic indexing of Prophetic traditions, most notably his work al-Mawsua al-Hadithiyya al-Shamila Bayn al-Waqi wa al-Mamul .
Scholarly Approach and Methodology
Qadi focused on modern encyclopedic approaches to compiling the Sunnah, publishing Mawsu‘at al-Hadith al-Nabawi through Dar al-Asima in Riyadh . In structuring his encyclopedic projects, he adopted a thematic classification based on jurisprudence chapters across four distinct operational tracks, organizing subjects into twenty primary divisions that encompass faith (iman), acts of worship (‘ibadat), family law, transactions, social life, ethics, education, the Quran, the Prophet's biography (sira), military expeditions (maghazi), delegations, virtues, food, clothing, medicine, oaths and vows, prescribed punishments (‘uqubat), and end-time tribulations (fitan wa ashrat al-sa‘a) .
His method relied on surveying printed sources, selecting critically edited versions, and revising classifications against newly published scholarship . In naming topics, he balanced traditional Hadith chapter headings with modern formulations suited to contemporary research, intentionally avoiding titles that prematurely settled disputed legal issues .
Qadi emphasized that assembling varied chains of transmission (turuq) and textual variants is essential for establishing the precise meaning of Hadith, reinforcing chains through corroboration, identifying text additions, and clarifying ambiguous phrasing . He framed encyclopedic compilation as an aid to researchers in other Islamic disciplines—such as jurists, exegetes, and historians—who require direct access to primary sources without the lengthy search times demanded by scattered traditional volumes . Several subject-specific offshoots from his compilations were published and circulated, including collections devoted to fasting, pilgrimage rites, Friday prayers, sacrificial offerings, and narrations regarding the Two Holy Mosques and al-Aqsa Mosque .
