Scholarly Focus and Methodology
In his reference work Mawsu'at al-Tayr wal-Hayawan fi al-Hadith al-Nabawi, published in Cairo, Ashur conducted a systematic study of the animal kingdom within the Prophetic hadith corpus . He set out to distinguish between sound narrations and baseless reports in circulation concerning animals, dedicating the book to the memory of his deceased young son, Ala .
Ashur's methodology in the work consisted of examining each animal individually by addressing its linguistic definition and innate characteristics, citing the relevant Prophetic traditions along with rigorous source verification (takhrij), and extracting the associated legal and jurisprudential rulings (ahkam fiqhiyya) . His analysis also detailed general Islamic rulings concerning animal welfare, such as the prohibition against overburdening beasts of burden or inflicting harm upon them .
Beyond hadith literature on fauna, Ashur also contributed to the study of traditional medicine with his work al-Tadawi bil-A'shab wal-Nabatat (Treatment with Herbs and Plants), published in Cairo .
