Abd al-Ghani ibn Said al-Azdi (332–409 AH / 944–1018 CE) was an Egyptian hadith master and genealogist known for his expertise in narrator biographical evaluation and identifying homonymous transmission chains .
Origin and Education
He was Abu Muhammad Abd al-Ghani ibn Said ibn Ali ibn Said ibn Bishr ibn Marwan al-Azdi al-Misri . He was born in Egypt with two nights remaining in Dhu al-Qa'da 332 AH (with alternative reports placing his birth in 333 AH or 335 AH) . He was raised in a scholarly environment; his uncle Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Said was a copyist who transcribed hadith manuscripts for prominent traditionists .
Al-Azdi acquired extensive knowledge in Egypt and traveled to Syria (al-Sham) to hear from regional masters . Among his principal teachers were Uthman ibn Muhammad al-Samarqandi, Ahmad ibn Bihzad al-Sirafi, Ismail ibn Ya'qub al-Jirab, Hamza ibn Muhammad al-Kinani, Abu Bakr al-Miyanaji, and the visiting master al-Daraqutni, whom al-Azdi assisted alongside the vizier Ja'far ibn Hinzaba . In turn, a generation of prominent traditionists transmitted from him, including Muhammad ibn Ali al-Suri, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Said al-Habbal, Rasha ibn Nazif, and Abu Abd Allah al-Quda'i .
Scholarly Standing and Contributions
Al-Azdi attained widespread recognition among his contemporaries for his precise memorization and mastery of narrator identities . Al-Daraqutni held him in high regard, remarking that he was "like a flame of fire"; when scholars in Egypt wept at al-Daraqutni's departure, the latter replied, "Do you weep when you have Abd al-Ghani among you?" . Abu Bakr al-Barqani noted that he had not seen anyone after al-Daraqutni with a greater memory than al-Azdi, and al-Suri similarly stated that he had never seen his equal in his field .
Al-Azdi authored pioneering treatises on confusing and orthographically similar narrator names, notably al-Mu'talif wa-al-Mukhtalif . He was also an active critic of scholarly works; when he composed his corrective treatise pointing out errors in al-Madkhal ila al-Sahih by Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, al-Hakim acknowledged his corrections, praised his insight, thanked him, and publicly read the corrections to his students .
Fatimid Persecution and Period in Hiding
During the reign of the Fatimid caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah in Egypt, al-Azdi frequently gathered for scholarly discussions at the library (Dar al-Kutub) with his close associates, the linguist Abu Usama Junada al-Azdi and the grammarian-reciter Abu Ali al-Antaki . When the caliph executed both Junada and al-Antaki in 399 AH, al-Azdi fled into hiding, fearing he would meet the same fate, and remained concealed until safety was restored .
Death
Al-Azdi died on Tuesday night and was buried on Tuesday, 7 Safar 409 AH (1018 CE), in Egypt at seventy-seven years of age . He was interred near the Eid prayer ground (musalla al-eid) before a massive funeral gathering, during which it was proclaimed: "This is the defender who banished falsehood from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ" .
