Abd al-Basit al-Malti (844–920 AH / 1440–1514 CE) was a Mamluk-era Hanafi jurist, physician, and historian based in Cairo, best known for his historical chronicles al-Rawd al-Basim fi Hawadith al-Umr wa al-Tarajim and Nayl al-Amal fi Dhayl al-Duwal .
Early Life and Family
Abu al-Makarim Zayn al-Din Abd al-Basit ibn Khalil ibn Shahin al-Zahiri al-Malti was born in Malatya on the night of Sunday, 11 Rajab 844 AH (1440 CE), during his father's tenure as governor of the city . He was also known by the moniker Ibn al-Wazir . His father, Ghars al-Din Khalil ibn Shahin al-Zahiri, was a prominent Mamluk commander, administrator, and author who held ministerial rank (wazir) in Egypt and governed several regions including Alexandria, Safed, and Malatya . His mother, Shukrbay, was a freed concubine (umm walad) who died in Damascus in 852 AH during childbirth when Abd al-Basit was eight years old . Through his paternal grandfather, Shahin al-Shaykhi—a mamluk of Sultan Barquq—the family traced its roots to Tatar origins from Saray .
Education and Travels
Al-Malti was raised across Malatya, Aleppo, and Damascus, where he received early instruction from his father and memorized foundational texts in Hanafi jurisprudence, including Manzumat al-Nasafi and Kanz al-Daqaiq . In Damascus, he attended the circles of Qiwam al-Din, Humayd al-Din al-Nu'mani, and the military judge Ala al-Din al-Rumi, and in Tripoli he studied under Burhan al-Din al-Baghdadi .
Upon settling in Cairo, he took up residence at the Shaykhuniyya complex . There he studied Arabic rhetoric under Najm al-Din al-Qurami, logic and theology (kalam) under Sharaf al-Din Yunus al-Rumi, and attended the broad multidisciplinary lectures of Muhyi al-Din al-Kafiyaji, receiving formal teaching authorizations (ijazas) from scholars such as Taqi al-Din al-Shumunni and Ibn al-Dayri . Al-Malti also journeyed to North Africa between 866 and 871 AH, traveling through Tunis, Kairouan, Constantine, Bejaia, Tlemcen, and Oran, where he studied theology, grammar, and medicine, and met scholars including Abu Abd Allah Muhammad al-Zaldawi .
Scholarly Standing and Reception
Al-Malti developed broad expertise in Hanafi jurisprudence, the rational sciences, medicine, and history . In Cairo, he frequented the historical lectures of al-Sakhawi, who described him as quiet, refined, reserved, and knowledgeable in prose and verse, noting that al-Malti drew heavily upon him for historical matters and composed verses praising him .
Among his students was the Egyptian chronicler Ibn Iyas, who referred to him as his teacher, praised his standing among Hanafi notables, and relied heavily on al-Malti's chronicle Nayl al-Amal fi Dhayl al-Duwal—a continuation of al-Dhahabi's Duwal al-Islam—incorporating large portions of its material into his own history . Ibn Iyas depicted al-Malti as tall and slender, wearing a Sufi lock of hair, proficient in the Turkish language, and highly respected by Mamluk amirs . His major personal chronicle, al-Rawd al-Basim fi Hawadith al-Umr wa al-Tarajim, was arranged annalistically beginning from his birth year of 844 AH .
Death
In his final years, al-Malti fell ill with tuberculosis and remained secluded in his Cairo home for approximately a year and a half . He died on Tuesday, 5 Rabi al-Akhir 920 AH (1514 CE), at approximately seventy-six years of age .
