Abd al-Aziz al-Uthaym (1367–1412 AH / 1948–1992 CE) was a Saudi hadith scholar and professor at Umm al-Qura University, known for his treatise Tahqiq al-Qawl bil-Amal bil-Hadith al-Daif ("Investigating the Position on Acting upon Weak Hadith") .

Academic Career and Scholarship

Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Uthaym served as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Da'wah and Usul al-Din at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca . His scholarly focus centered on hadith criticism, transmission chains (asanid), and the methodology of evaluating narrations .

In legal and hadith methodology, al-Uthaym examined the disputed issue of acting on weak hadiths in his treatise Tahqiq al-Qawl bil-Amal bil-Hadith al-Daif . He argued against acting upon narrations agreed to be weak, contending that the established corpus of authentic hadiths provides sufficient guidance and that relying on unproven narrations leads to introducing unsanctioned devotional practices . He also co-authored the specialized methodological study Dirasat al-Asanid ("Study of Chains of Transmission") with the hadith scholar Ata Allah ibn Abd al-Ghaffar al-Sindi .

In manuscript editing, al-Uthaym prepared an edition of Kitab al-Qadar by Ibn Wahb, published in Mecca in 1406 AH . Later editors noted that his editorial approach involved directly emending certain textual phrases where he believed the manuscript's wording conflicted with other transmission lines .

Al-Uthaym died in 1412 AH (1992 CE) .
