Abd al-Aziz al-Hulayl (Abu Abd Allah Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Uthman al-Hulayl) is a contemporary scholar of Hadith and researcher, known for his bibliographic study al-Tasnif fi al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah wa Ulumiha fi al-Qarn al-Khamis al-Hijri (Classification in the Prophetic Sunnah and Its Sciences in the Fifth Hijri Century).

Scholarly Contributions

Al-Hulayl's scholarship centers on Hadith documentation, historical classification, and the analysis of hidden defects (ilal) in prophetic traditions. In his specialized historical monograph al-Tasnif fi al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah wa Ulumiha fi al-Qarn al-Khamis al-Hijri, he documented and surveyed the literature produced in Hadith and its ancillary fields during the fifth Islamic century. The work examined the century's compositional genres, including treatises on Hadith methodology and terminology, compilation collections, dictation sessions (amali), thematic parts (ajza'), and biographical and historical dictionaries, while analyzing the central influence of prominent figures such as al-Khatib al-Baghdadi.

In the field of Hadith criticism and defective narrations, he prepared al-Ahadith allati A'allaha Imam al-A'immah Ibn Khuzaymah fi Sahihihi fi Kitab al-Wudu' (Traditions Declared Defective by Imam Ibn Khuzaymah in His Sahih in the Chapter of Ablution). Al-Hulayl also worked on the verification and authentication of early classical texts, providing the documentation and Hadith verification (takhrij) for al-Fara'id (The Shares of Inheritance) by Sufyan al-Thawri under the editorial supervision of Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Haddad.
