Abbas Hasan (1318–1398 AH / 1900–1978 CE) was an Egyptian grammarian, scholar of Arabic literature, and professor at Dar al-Ulum, best known for his comprehensive grammatical reference work al-Nahw al-Wafi ("The Comprehensive Grammar") .

Life and Career

Hasan was born in the city of Menouf in the Menofia Governorate of Egypt . He began his studies at al-Azhar, where he studied religious disciplines and Arabic language, and subsequently entered Dar al-Ulum .

Following his education, he joined Dar al-Ulum as an instructor of grammar and progressed through the academic ranks to become a professor and head of the Department of Grammar, Morphology, and Prosody at the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum, Cairo University . In 1967 CE, he was elected to membership in the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo . He died in 1398 AH (1978 CE) .

Scholarly Contribution

Hasan is regarded as a major authority in Arabic grammar whose scholarship sought to organize classical grammar for modern educational needs . His primary achievement, the four-volume work al-Nahw al-Wafi, structured grammatical rules into two distinct tiers: an initial concise section tailored for university students, followed by an advanced section titled Ziyada wa-Tafsil ("Supplement and Detail") intended for specialists and professors, using clear examples to elucidate complex rules .

In al-Lugha wa-l-Nahw bayna al-Qadim wa-l-Hadith ("Language and Grammar Between Ancient and Modern"), he addressed linguistic reform and criticized burdensome scholastic rationalizations ('ilal) found in traditional grammatical works, arguing that grammatical forms are rooted in following authentic classical usage rather than speculative causes . He also wrote al-Mutanabbi wa-Shawqi, a literary study examining poetic leadership in classical and modern Arabic poetry .
